Internet politics.
The internet is a wonderful thing. It is a doorway to the rest of the world, making any piece of information only a click away. It is a perfect example of the communist state. In communism, all property is owned by the community as a whole, and all people have equal social and economic status. The internet does not discriminate, it gives a voice to everyone and anyone willing to talk. You just have to look at the rise in people like myself who keep a Blog to see that it's true: everyone can, and anyone does blog. But for me, that's where the problem starts.
I don't know if it is a product of the internet, or whether the internet is merely magnifying the issue, but the lack of basic understanding of the English language is appalling. The amount of people I have seen posting on internet forums who can't even use the right there, their or they're is staggering. Don't even get me started on apostrophes. Many people seem compelled to put an apostrophe in wherever there's an 's', without any understanding of what it means. I fear they're just hedging thier bets, and not taking time to think it through. Now I understand that the internet is a fast paced environment, but taking the time to get the correct spelling never killed anyone.
Sadly, the internet gives a voice to those who, quite frankly, shouldn't have a voice, or at least shouldn't be allowed to talk until they've learnt how to spell. Now, I'll admit I'm not perfect. I, like anyone else, make mistakes from time to time. Yet to see such basic errors in spelling and grammar must reveal a disturbing trend in today's society for sheer ignorance, and there is no excuse for ignorance.
Is the internet a cause of this, or is it merely digging up these offenders from an already ignorant society? For if it is the cause, then I shouldn't really complain. Language is constantly developing: shifting with the changing society, and what one thing has had more of an impact on today's society than anything else? The internet. So maybe, what we are witnessing is just a shift in society's use of language. Doubtless it's just a matter of time before the works of Dickens and Shakespeare are translated into 'txt speak'.
