Balderdash and piffle.

I watched the first in a series of programmes on BBC TWO yesterday called Balderdash and Piffle. It's about the origins of words we use today that are unclear or poorly sourced. The overall aim is to re-write the Oxford English Dictionary. For every word, the OED cites the earliest written example of that word in use. For some, the word was being used long before the first written example and the guests on the show try to hunt down earlier examples. Viewers are also invited to help in the word search on the web site. Could you help to re-write the OED?
