Fact or theory?
Several Imax cinemas in the US have decided not to show science films that back Charles Darwin's theory of evolution for fear of religious back-lash (BBC link). In a test screening of one film they got comments like: "I really hate it when the theory of evolution is presented as fact", and "I don't agree with their presentation of human existence". Absurd. Firstly, no-one should have to pull a film that the majority of people will enjoy simply because it offends a small religious minority. Although, it must be said that in America that particular minority isn't very minor! Secondly, the only alternative to evolution is creationism and, quite frankly, that's bonkers. How can anyone believe that the human race and all other living creatures, together with the sun, moon, rivers and trees et al were created by 'God'. It really worries me when I talk to people who shun the fact of science in favour of religious dogma. It worries me even more when I see world leaders (George W. Bush and Tony Blair) doing the same.
