Utah cinema cancels Brokeback screening.
Now, I know I don't live in America and I know this sort of thing isn't typical of all Americans, but it really pisses me off when things like this happen. These stroies are always accompanied by a quote from some far right religious group and this one is no exception:
I am a firm believer that religion is the root of all evil and will be watching the Channel 4 documentary with close interest tonight.
Update: I watched that Channel 4 documentary yesterday and, although Prof. Dawkins is clearly an intelligent man, I felt the programme lacked a clear counter-argument to the single-minded dogma that the religious fundamentalists were spouting. It did, however, compound the argument that religion is the root of all evil. It was quite disturbing watching what looked like quite ordinary people come out with utterly preposterous statements about religion and some particularly laughable arguments against science. I won't get into the whole creationist argument again, I've said my piece on that but, it does scare me to think that there are pople who really believe this stuff. [10/01/2006]
Gayle Ruzicka, president of the conservative Utah Eagle Forum, was in favour of the film being cancelled. "I just think [pulling the show] tells the young people especially that maybe there is something wrong with this show," she said.Maybe there's something wrong with you Gayle - that you cannot accept the fact that homosexuality exists and that it's normal. Is it honestly better to let children, some of whom will be gay, grow up thinking that homosexuality is evil?
